Well done everyone; we now have over 600 signatures and the number is growing slowly, but steadily. It may be a gentle drip, but we all know what gently dripping water can do to even the hardest of rocks. I was contacted recently by Professor Giorgio Venturini a highly regarded, senior, retired academic who has taught and advised on law on four continents. He has signed the petition and asked for a copy of it as he wishes to write about it. I have no idea what he will say, but he has written many powerful and influential articles and books during his long career and I will keep everyone posted. Once again, thank you all; at the moment it may be a small voice, but it is a voice and it's growing.
To: His Excellency the Governor-General of Australia
Stop this government's madness
We call on His Excellency to restore the standing of this nation in the eyes of the world by withdrawing ministerial warrants, dissolving the current parliament, appointing a caretaker government and beginning the issuance of writs for a new general election.
Why is this important?
Prior to the election Tony Abbott and other members of the current front bench made important promises to the people of Australia, among which were to maintain, or improve standards in a number of areas, with health and education foremost among them. Tony Abbott asked us to trust him personally and any government he led to abide by his pre-election promises and committments. Since the election virtually every promise made by him has been broken and the current Liberal National Party (LNP) coalition has demonstrated an inability to form rational government. It is ideologically bound and incapable of making decisions in the interests of both Australia as a nation and in diverse areas of interest including science and technology, environmental protection, social cohesion, the arts, law and justice and gender issues. It has also shown a serious and dangerous lack of respect for Parliamentary procedure by failing to appoint an independent and objective Speaker of the Lower House.
This petition is without any political agenda. It cites in support the clear incompetence and inability of ministers to carry out their work. For example:
1 The farce of multiple conflicting decisions, none of which were needed, in the early days of this parliament over implementation of the Gonski reforms.
2 The scrapping of numerous scientific agencies and endeavours.
3 The arrogant refusal to tell the Australian people, whom they serve, the truth about policy and its implementation over border controls.
4 The diplomatic incidents, particularly with our near neighbours.
5 An arrogant and offensive dismissal of groups and individuals based on ignorance, prejudice, stereotypical attitudes and outdated and retrograde political ideology.
The opening remarks of a recent article in 'The Conversation' by Michelle Grattan read as follows, 'What is offensive about this government is not that it is pursuing tough policies, but that it is trashing accountability...' The article has drawn a large number of comments from all political persuasions, the vast majority of which support the view that this government has betrayed our trust. It has also shown itself to be arrogantly out of touch and were it a commercial trading enterprise, dishonest to the point of criminality throughout its campaigning and since. It is so deeply lacking in even the basic skills of diplomacy that it has severely damaged the standing of Australia in the world as a free and fair democracy. Members of the front bench have demonstrated individual shortcomings that include a staggering ignorance of history and world affairs, prejudice towards many groups in society based on everything from race to gender issues, and downright childish rudeness towards their colleagues, the electorate and anyone who offers a differing view of the world from their own.
In short, the LNP is, in the view of very many Australians of all political persuasions, unfit to govern.
