Stop Police Brutality at Mardi Gras

We call on you to publicly investigate Police conduct at Sydney's Mardi Gras and the complaints made by members of the public about violence and police brutality. We call on you to ensure that all officers involved in misconduct are disciplined and that all police officers are properly trained in sensitivity to the LGBTQI community.

Shocking footage has emerged of Police brutality at the Sydney Mardi Gras. And this is not an isolated incident. Several victims have begun to come forward to speak publicly about their treatment by police. It's appalling that at a celebration for the Gay and Lesbian community where police are meant to be protecting the community, that they would victimise and beat people.

Nobody should be subject to unprovoked and unnecessary violence at the hands of the police. It puts our community at risk and makes it harder for the police to do their job. Police brutality and over policing is a real problem for young people, homeless people and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. It's up to us to hold the police to account for incidents like this.

Reasons for signing

  • Po Po need to be held accountable
  • Public scrutiny is not only desirable it is critical. Also signed because there are so many great police in Australia who need to come forward and denounce this kind of abuse of power. Police misconduct is an insult and embarrassment to those many police who act in good faith and with good character.
  • As a community, we must (without question) film any and all police activity in order to ensure the police are accountable for their behaviour and actions. In other words, just as we are held accountable so must they! Otherwise, chaos, anarchy and civil unrest will unravel. A society's inalienable right is to be protected. A government that employs police officers acting without integrity and dignity is an inept entity that requires immediate replacement.
