Stop BP's plans to drill for oil in the Great Australian Bight
Refuse BP's plans to drill for oil in the Great Australian Bight marine park and vicinity.
Why is this important?
In 2010, BP was responsible for the rupture of the Deepwater Horizon well in the Gulf of Mexico resulting in the world’s largest and most devastating oil spill – which occurred in calmer and more shallow waters than those in the Great Australian Bight. BP's plans to drill for oil in the Great Australian Bight could devastate most of Australia's southern coastline according to a modelling study commissioned by the Wilderness Society in 2015. This would shut down fisheries, affect seabirds and sea lions and threaten a vitally important breeding colony of Southern Right Whales, which are listed as "endangered" under The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora ("CITES"). Under CITES, countries with known breeding populations are obligated to protect them. Without such protection, Southern Right Whales risk extinction.
Biologist Dr. Reese Halter has observed that "burning the Great Australian Bight Marine National Park oil and gas reserves is a prescription for an epic irreversible global catastrophe. It would elevate Earth’s global temperature to the top end of the Paris Agreement or 2C." With the consequent and rapid melting of sheet ice, all coastal cities would be submerged. The oceans and the marine life they support are a vital component to ensuring the continuing health of ALL life on Earth. They are the lungs of the planet providing us with oxygen and regulating climate.
As Dr. Reese Halter eloquently states "Short-term fossil fuel profits at the expense of the human race are genocide" Together - we can prevent that from happening to protect the planet - for now - and future generations. Don't let BP drill.
