Save the Leigh Creek Coal Monuments

Save the Leigh Creek Coal Monuments

To: Government of SA

Premier and responsible Ministers of South Australia.

The Leigh Creek Coal Mine Tourist lookout is threatened with destruction.

The Monuments to the Coal Mining era and the coal miners were sold cheaply for scrap recently. Flinders Ranges communities and friends ask that you help us save these heritage items for current and future generations to enjoy and ponder.

New South Wales recognizes their Bucyrus Erie 9W excavator as a monument to their history and so should the government of SA assist with the preservation of mining and indigenous heritage (Yulus Coal) which is uniquely located together at this iconic post coal era lookout.

We, the undersigned petition the state government of South Australia to take steps immediately to save this site from destruction and to recognize it for what it is recognized for, a monument to the coal era and the people of the region. Please spread the word so that we can preserve this heritage site forever.

With thanks,

Why is this important?

Bucyrus Erie and the Leigh Creek lookout was established as a monument and is a monument that must remain in the region lest we forget everything we almost learned.

Reasons for signing

  • I grew up in Leigh Creek and it had a positive impact on me. It should be a protected and promoted for tourism in the Northern Flinders Ranges. It is our history.
  • I love playing on old machines like trans and stuff and because when I get older these things won't be around to have fun with
  • Don't scrap the old digger, scrap the idiots instead

The site and heritage items are again threatened. The site can be made safe and the mine rehab plan can be modified - however Flinders Power have not responded to requests to negotiate this for the future of the region. A meeting with the Minister has now been requested...please distribute the petition.

Many thanks for your support.

The Leigh Creek Lookout and Heritage items are now nominated for protection under the Heritage Act and various media have covered the story well including the ABC which has given extensive radio news coverage.

Many supporters have come forward to assist a major project - The Sir Thomas Playford Heritage Park which will celebrate the coal heritage and support innovative new business for the region. Interested parties can contact the group at palyfordheritagepark@gmail.com

There is demolition preparation activity at the Monument site now, these are the latest photos of the machinery. The Yulus Coal relics have been surrounded by a mound of dirt. The tourist lookout site and the heriatge machinery will be history shortly, please spread the word and help save this iconic tourist lookout.
