Save the Aboriginal Butterfly Cave

Save the Aboriginal Butterfly Cave

Roche Group must revise Stage 7 of their subdivision plan for Appletree Grove Estate at West Wallsend NSW to protect the ancient Awabakal Butterfly Cave and it's contextual bushland setting.

Why is this important?

An important Awabakal women’s place – The Butterfly Cave – is at real and immediate risk of damage from a subdivision being built 20m/65ft away. It's contextual bushland setting will be destroyed.
If we lose the Butterfly Cave it will be an environmental and cultural tragedy.
We have witnessed the destruction of too many precious sites in bush and city Australia. The desecration must stop and it must stop NOW.
Women's business matters!

Reasons for signing

  • Having just heard about this cave and the danger it is in I thought I would add my name to the petition.
  • The Butterfly Cave was traditionally used by Awabakal women as a ceremonial, teaching and birthing place, and continues to be used culturally by local women and children for teaching and learning. The significance of the site was recognised by the NSW government in 2013 when it was declared an Aboriginal Place - the first women's place to receive such recognition. It is their land and this comapny has no business destroying the land. Once is it gone, it is gone forever
  • TIME TO STAND UP AND BE COUNTED!! HOW DOES THIS PROPOSED DESECRATION OF AN ANCIENT CULTURAL HERITAGE SITE ACKNOWLEDGE AND RESPECT TRADITIONAL OWNERS OF THE LAND??
