Stop the removal of current "Safety Officers" from NSW Rail.
Why is this important?
As stated by the Minister at the 2013 Memorial to the Granville Disaster, "safety is an absolute priority to the NSW government", and at the very same time she is sacking in force frontline Network Operations Officers who are not middle or upper management, but those people who are responded to all levels of incidents within the rail system. They are the Railways “Safety Officers”.
These officers are also responsible for initial investigations of incidents and follow-up enquiries, the alcohol checks, as NSW Rail has a “Zero Alcohol” tolerance in the work place, mobilization of buses when incidents and track work close lines, education of employees in safe operations within the workplace and all other aspects of workplace safety.
The Minister, Gladys Berejiklian, has stated that these incidents will be passed on to Station Managers, the one that are left, however there has been no communication with these people, no mention of training, and definitely no mention of remuneration for increased responsibility.
The Minister, Gladys Berejiklian has commenced the changes without any benchmark for achievement or success which can only lead to another "Granville".
At the present time and when the Minister, Gladys Berejiklian made her policy speech to the press she clearly stated that "cost has nothing to do with these changes", however, due to shift penalties, call outs to emergencies and safety duties during 'track work' these safety officers have been targeted by the ministers consultancy Firm as having excessive income.
Why then, is Gladys Berejiklian paying out $2million to train non-English speaking station attendants to make announcements that can be understood? Not for Safety reasons
Why is Gladys Berejiklian prepared to waste Millions on changing uniforms simply for appearance? Not for safety.
Is it true that the Officers that Gladys Berejiklian is forcing redundancy on are an intricate part of the NSW State Disaster Plan? And, if this is so, what chaos can rail travelers expect if and when another 'Granville' should occur. That's if, the injured should survive long enough for NSW Rail Services to mobilize.
The travelling public should start to worry about just how safe NSW Trains are.
