Coles and Woolworths, please support marriage equality and stop kowtowing the SDA
Dear Coles and Woolworths,
We ask that both Coles and Woolworths issue a statement of support for marriage equality with Australian Marriage Equality. Other companies such as David Jones, Commonwealth Bank and QANTAS have already done so.
We draw attention to recent stories published in the Fairfax press that Woolworths and Coles have been accepting payments from the Shop, Distributive & Allied Employees' Union ("SDA") to maintain and promote their membership.
The SDA have been staunch opponents of marriage equality and they have an enormous influence on the Australian Labor Party which they manipulate to further their own agenda.
Your company's recorded support for marriage equality will clarify your positive position on this issue.
Why is this important?
The SDA union is one of the largest unions in Australia which includes a variety of occupations such as retail employees, hairdressers, beauticians, shop assistants and models.
With a conservative background, the SDA was led by Joe de Bruyn between 1978 and 2014 who is well known for his views against marriage equality. Mr de Bruyn continues to have substantial influence in the SDA and holds staunchly Catholic views against marriage equality with comments such as, "Marriage started with Adam and Eve".
It has been reported that almost two-thirds of Australians support marriage equality. Mr de Bruyn's views are not consistent with the majority of Australians and he does not seek to consult the membership of the SDA about this issue.
Recently, it has been reported by Fairfax that the SDA contributes substantial funds to Coles and Woolworths to maintain and support its membership.
For this reason, Coles and Woolworths should make their support for marriage equality known.
