To politicians of all parties:
The Constitution of Australia is outdated and inadequate in many ways. It needs fixing. Because our society is constantly evolving and changing, this should be an ongoing process. Therefore, the nation needs a standing Constitution Commission, just like the Law Reform Commission, to address the need for reform both now and into the future.
Why is this important?
The debacle over citizenship of parliamentarians is only the tip of the iceberg. There are many important constitutional issues that need addressing, such as: Recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Straits Islanders; a Bill of Rights for all citizens; the establishment of a democratic republic; recognition of local and regional government.
Other countries, such as France, regularly update their constitution. Australia should do the same.
