Hey Australia Post - Snail Mail belongs to the PeopleAustralia Post belongs to everybody. The charter for Customer Service of Australia Post states that they are required to be (a) "making the basic letter service available to all Australians on an equitable basis" and (b) "consulting directly with affected local communities when proposing changes to an existing one". Contrary to these committments, the delivery speed now discriminates according to how much you pay and no customers were consulted about this decision. Australia Post and the Prime Minister justified the change by stating that the business side of Australia Post is losing profit by propping up the regular mail. However, they seem to have forgotten that (a) the regular mail is core business and ensures a monopoly to the non-core businesse AND (b) Australia Post belongs to the public (at least for now). The CEO of Australia Post receives a large salary when the job of the postal delivery is not being done!

All aboard. If you can! Make QRs new $4b trains accessiblePeople with disability (PWD) in Queensland need your support to ensure their citizen rights are upheld. Based on the specifications publicly available there will be many groups of PWD (vision impairment, physical disability, intellectual disability and autism) that will be disadvantaged in both boarding and exiting the trains. Taxpayer funded public transport that by its very nature is meant to be a driver for inclusion of citizens into community will instead exclude. In 2013 the Newman government Department of Transport and Main Roads awarded a tender for NGR. The 75 newly designed trains are due to begin service on the South East Queensland passenger rail network later this year, and the remaining fleet rolled out by late 2018. The current design has a number of access issues. 1. The corridor linking a carriage purpose-designed with accessible seating and a toilet is too narrow for most manual and motorized wheelchairs causing some PWD to have to leave the train and re-enter through a different door in order to use the bathroom. A time consuming exercise, potentially dangerous whilst raining, all whilst the train stays to a timetable. 2. The toilet space does not meet the relevant size standards set out in legislation. Meaning it is simply inaccessible to some PWD who use a wheelchair for mobility and a danger to use for others. 3. The location of the guard (who assists a PWD with boarding and exiting the train) will be at the rear instead of in the middle of the train. This is a change from years of the guard being located in the middle of the train so as to intentionally align the guard with the purpose built accessible boarding area on existing station platforms. The new rear location presents potential safety concerns for a PWD being left behind on a platform due to not being seen from a guard location at the end-of-the-train – concerns that are real and potentially life threatening on an unmanned station late at night. These trains are meant for 30-plus years of service, meaning potential generations of PWD missing out on community inclusion. The roll-out will coincide with the implementation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in Queensland. The NDIS has been designed to be the foundation of a new era of participation for PWD, and accessible public transport is key to participation in jobs, education, training, social life. The Queensland Government is currently consulting on “Towards an all abilities Queensland” which will become the new state government plan for disability in Queensland. Its proposed vision is that “Queenslanders of all abilities can live the life they choose.” Given the $4b train design it begs the question, can PWD choose to use a train in Queensland? If you feel PWD should be able to choose to use a train in Queensland please support this petition. If you would like to make an individual contribution make sure to also email the Deputy Premier (email@example.com) and cc myself (firstname.lastname@example.org) to explain to her exactly how this issue would deny your citizen rights.
FUND NDIS PROPERLYAustralian disabled people deserve to not only have an insurance scheme that will assist them actively engage in the community and be supported with their disabilities, they don't need to be used as a political football by the Government for sake of politics. Its time big business gave something back to Australia!
Let's End Phoenix CompaniesAustralia has a $3 billion problem of phoenix companies. Know anyone that's lost money to a company going "broke" only to see a similar business start trading again as if nothing happened? When this is done deliberately, it is known as 'phoenix activity' and costs Australians $3 billion each year. It affects thousands of people and it can happen to anyone at anytime. It causes approximately 100 times the devastation of our typical street robberies. It typically involves 'friendly administrators' or 'friendly liquidators', terms which have now become common when doing business in Australia, however, illegal phoenix companies are a serious crime. It is meant to be enforced by ASIC, but ASIC takes no meaningful action.
Make Australia Post AccountableAustralia Post has become typical of the way giant corporations think and act. They don't give a damn about the little people even though it is the little people that are the majority of their source of income. This issue has become very personal because their incompetence caused severe mental trauma on the eve of our wedding day. Because of their actions our wedding almost had to be postponed which would have created immense cost not only to us but to our guests especially those coming interstate. I got sick of the excuses and having to repeat myself to the various consultants and all they did was in the end hide behind legislation and tried to offer me a refund of my mailing costs. I refused because that is an insult and cannot compensate for what they have caused.
Save ABC integrity and variety especially on RNWhere else can an Australian audience get the variety and depth of views and visions and above all the stimulation of such a range of ideas? Where else is there such a range of respected specialist journalists who cover everything from arts to science and religion to rock? Why is the ABC accused of left-wing bias when it shows opinions of all spectra and gives voice - although not as much as it could or should - to those who don't have access to commercial media. Why don't the Board and your minister develop pride in this unique and irreplaceable institution and those who work for it, instead of white-anting and undermining the amazingly talented a dedicated staff? There is no place for Information and enlightenment in the categories below but the ABC covers them all so I've ticked them all!
DUMP PLANS FOR SA's NUCLEAR HIGH LEVEL DUMPFukushima and Chernobyl taught the world that nuclear accidents are very expensive and toxic for generations and leave horrific tragedy in their wake. South Australian Jay Wetherill is currently pushing his Government's plans by using a publicly funded Education Campaign. He and his government are spending public funds to spin the ' it is all proven, scientific and safe' line in his current expensive roadshow. His goal is to place a global HIGH LEVEL NUCLEAR RUBBISH DUMP for short term profit in South Australia. He would like to place his own and South Australias' children's children's future at stake and just for money. Speculation and debate about long term finanncial cost / benefits of such an operation for a high level radioactive waste site is that it may prove to be a financial disaster. This is even if their is no nuclear leak, accident or clean up in tens, hundreds, or thousands of years time from today. If Mr Wetherill and the ALP of South Australia succeeded and any of the transported and stored waste containers EVER leak in an unforseen event or are accessed by wrong hands or motives it will prove potentially environmentally catastrophic. YES : SA needs smart new growth industries, not old outmoded nuclear plants spent nuclear waste in our back yard. NUCLEAR IS FOREVER Mr Wetherill- Just not here with toxic waste products please. Let the countries and wealthy energy company's that made the problem find other ways and places to deal with it. We understand their are companies involved in making large money from the real and pressing need to get rid of nuclear waste, it also asists with selling more nuclear power stations in future but we dont want that problem in our home state. As with Pangea back in the 90's the federal government met strong opposition and it stopped the project.. This is not a minor project of political short term consequence, this is a forever problem if your government succeeds in its wishes. DUMP THE DUMP
Let's Unite To Fight Back The Banks, While We Wait For A Royal CommissionWe should seed the changes for a better world and not wait in vain on politicians' promises. The Big 4 Australian banks are on the list of the most profitable banks in the world. They are the biggest corporations in Australia together with the big mining companies, and politicians have done minimum to reduce their oligopoly power. A Royal Commission after all the scandals over the past years is what we all want. However our politicians might not deliver on our aspirations to scrutinize the banks. Therefore, let's take actions on our hands and build a better future for all Australians.
Extend the proposed light rail beyond Hobart and MONAThe Brighton and Kingborough Municipal Councils are two of the fastest growing residential areas in the state and both lie within 30 kilometres of the Hobart CBD, with existing rail infrastructure already running from Bridgewater to Hobart. Given that this rail infrastructure already exists, it only makes sense to use this for passenger rail. It will ease stress on the Brooker Highway and Main Road running through Hobart's northern suburbs, parking space and congestion in Hobart's City Centre will be relieved, and stress on the Southern Outlet between Kingston and Hobart will also ease. Also, given that a light rail vehicle will run on electricity, Aurora and Transend will have an additional main client to supply electricity to and they can afford to lower the unit price of electricity to residents, especially those on lower incomes. Tasmania is also a self-sufficient supplier of hydroelectricity, a clean and renewable energy resource, that can reduce commuter dependence on petroleum-powered buses and cars. An extended light rail system is a good idea for safer and cleaner transport, the environment and commuters on lower and higher incomes.
let's support our Dairy Farmers now!The money raised would go directly to the affected Dairy Farmers who are now faced with; 1] Reducing their herd to pay the retrospective charge. 2] Taking on more debt. 3] Consider selling up as the price of milk paid by the Processors is not sustainable for a viable business. While the price of some Supermarket Brand milk remains at $1 a litre our Dairy Farmers are working hard to produce safe milk for us with little return for them. Now they are paying it back!
Get Village Cinemas to return price of Classic Combo back to $20 from $25!!Dear Village Movies CEO Mr Edwards, People who legitimately go to movies instead of download them or watch a DVD are penalised for supporting the movie industry instead of being rewarded. An increase of over 25% is outrageous. Already Australians pay a relatively high fee to see films on the big screen. A global analysis of the price of cinema tickets relative to GDP has found most Australian cities hovering around the mid-50s (Melbourne, 52; Adelaide, 53; Perth, 54; Sydney, 55). If Village movies don’t want lower attendance at cinemas don’t increase prices. Jumping from $20 to $25 for a classic combo and $3 to $4 for additional items is outrageous!
Mr Abbott Please Don't Slash the Solar SubsidyThe Australian solar industry has been rocked by a Federal Government announcement that the solar subsidy could be repealed or at best, cut by up to 93%. The Abbott appointed Renewable Energy Target (RET) Panel has provided the Federal Government with its recommendations in the “Renewable Energy Target Scheme Report of the Expert Panel” (RET Report) released 28 August 2014. The Abbott RET Report has presented us with two options: 1. The first option is to scrap residential and commercial solar subsidies effective immediately 2. The second option is to slash commercial solar subsidies by 93% and residential subsidies by a third. On page 36 of the RET Report, it states, “that under the current RET scheme, wholesale electricity prices would fall slightly over the period….” The RET Review’s own modelling paints the truth of the matter on page 38 of the report by showing the winners and losers of repealing the RET: • Black Coal NPV revenue increases 65% from $18.4 billion to $30.5billion (+$12.1 billion) • Wind NPV revenue decreases 81% from $17.5 billion down to $3.3 billion (-$14.2 billion) • Solar NPV revenue decreases 90% from $2 billion down to $0.2 billion (-$1.8 billion) So in summary, repealing the RET will: • increase electricity prices • kill the solar panel industry • kill the wind industry • reward antiquated Black Coal Why Tony Abbott has decided to pick this fight is beyond us at Tindo. The RET scheme doesn't cost the Government a cracker as it is the big polluters who pay for the scheme. Why kill the renewable energy industry, bolster up coal and make electricity more expensive? It just makes no sense whatsoever. The RET was first legislated in 2000 by the Howard Government with a 2% Renewable Energy Target. In 2009, the Liberal and Labor parties jointly agreed to the expansion of the Renewable Energy Target up to 20% out to the year 2030. On the back of this bipartisan long term policy and in good faith, the founders of Tindo decided to start up what is now Australia’s last remaining solar panel manufacturer. Tindo has created new jobs and new skills for Australia through its investment in a high tech, innovative and automated manufacturing facility. Uncertainty is a killer for business. Tindo hopes a response confirming the continuation of the RET unchanged is forthcoming swiftly from the Government inline with its pre-election promises and commitments. Tindo understands that over 20,000 jobs in the renewable energy sector are now at risk along with billions of dollars of infrastructure investments being put on hold. As you may already know, Tindo is currently rolling out a new way of delivering solar to the Australian public through a power purchase agreement program. This Tindo program is supported by the Clean Energy Finance Corporation and seeks to create hundreds of new jobs in South Australia just 5km from the soon to be defunct Holden plant. This multi million dollar scheme is launching at the same time the Government is talking about scrapping the Renewable Energy Target. Here at Tindo, we remain hopeful that the Federal Government will not break their election promise by changing the RET. Feel free to send your local member, or even all members of Parliament an email or a letter sharing your thoughts on this matter. Heritage Housing Pain in AustraliaAustralia's heritage system is set up so that certain individual property owners are forced to bear the costs of heritage conservation for the rest of the general public. It is not fair, or ethical and some people are cracking under pressure of this large financial burden. The individual heritage property owner is often put at a large financial disadvantage through serious devaluation of property price (by over 25% on average calculated by Herron Todd White – Australia’s largest independent property valuation and advisory group in Australia) (Australian Government Productivity Commission, 2006, Conservation of Australia's Historic Heritage Places - Productivity Commission Inquiry Report No.37, Canberra, Media and Publications Productivity Commission, p.164, Box 7.3), higher maintenance or restoration costs due to the requirement for specialised tradespeople, additional administrative costs, limitations on the ability to modify or adapt the property and limitations on the ability to develop the site. What usually then occurs is that heritage listed properties are often neglected and run into disrepair. So, not only does Australia’s heritage system cause financial devastation to hundreds of families, but it doesn’t even work to conserve our heritage! This needs to change. There are more progressive heritage systems employed by other countries (in particular Colorado, USA) which work, and Australia needs to follow their lead. Their private heritage property owners have adequate financial support and great tax incentives, so people try to nominate their own property to be on their national heritage register! People look after their heritage property because it is in their best interests to. This is unlike the situation in Australia where heritage funding is minimal and therefore the reliance is on owners of heritage properties to pay for all/most of the bill and suffer the devaluation in their property value. Resentment against heritage listing is increasing in Australia, and without financial help people will naturally neglect their heritage listed property because it just costs too much. It's time to take a stand, so please support our campaign by adding your name below and click on on 'Good vs Bad Heritage Systems' at http://heritagepainoz.my-free.website to learn more.
Don't Frack Victoria!Hydraulic fracturing 'fracking' involves the high-pressure injection of millions of litres of water, sand and chemicals into shale cracks. Not only does the process involve huge (and scare) volumes of water, The risks associated with this process are serious. In Australia and the US, fracking has: - contaminated and depleted aquifers and drinking water, - damaged land and habitats, and - caused methane leaks, causing serious air pollution. A large area of southern Victoria is targeted for shale oil and gas exploration and eventual production. A ban on unconventional gas production is required so that our domestic, livestock and food water resources, and our very valuable food production is protected from the very real risks of water and food contamination, as has happened in other spread of Australua and overseas!!. Legislation must be strengthened to protect the precious water in our environmental, cultural, heritage, recreational and food producing areas. Victoria, particularly the higher rainfall areas of the south is fast becoming the food bowl for the rest of Australia, with high per hectare production of milk and meat. This resource could be jeopardised should fracking be allowed to occur.
Fair price for milkDairy farmers are facing a devastating time, with part of this due to the low milk prices consumers pay. This is not sustainable. It has, and will continue to, result in some dairy farmers and their families facing ruin, leaving their farms and killing their herds. Creating an option of differential pricing at the point of sale would enable consumers to pay a fair price for milk and support dairy farmers.
Keep Australia in Australian Hands! Stop selling Australian farming land to overseas interestsAustralia risks losing control of its wealth-creating agricultural assets. The Federal Government is not paying sufficient attention to the issue of global food security, Austrlian agricultural jobs and the rising cost of living. Instead they are craving an instant hit of tax rather than securing the future assets for our children. Kidman and Co, Australia's biggest private landholding, which includes the world's largest cattle station, is up for sale, including eleven cattle stations covering more than 100,000 square kilometres of Australian land, including all stock and equipment. And the Federal Government is allowing sale to overseas interests! "Australia has more foreign investment land than any other nation. In fact, in the last three years the foreign investment of 50 per cent foreign-owned or greater has gone up by around 25 per cent. For anything with partial foreign investment it's gone up by 11 per cent. So we've had an exponential growth in foreign ownership in our agricultural assets in Australia." Barnaby Joyce, Nationals MP, Minister for Agriculture, Nov 2015 Recent sales of prime cattle and farming land is driving up the cost of milk and meat for Australian families. "THERE are fears the price of dairy products and baby formula are set to soar after Treasurer Scott Morrison rubber-stamped the sale of the nation’s biggest dairy farm to Chinese business interests. Mr Morrison yesterday ruled the $280 million acquisition of Tasmania’s 17,800ha Van Diemen’s Land Company by Chinese billionaire Lu Xianfeng’s Moon Lake Investments could go ahead after consulting the Foreign Investment Review Board." Daily Telegraph 24/02/16
Stop letting pedophiles walk our streetsPlease don't be offended, I'm a survivor of child sexual abuse, & at 51, I am in treatment to deal with the daily nightmares, I'm also in the process of having my perpetrator charged, but I'm scared! Because from what I'm seeing on a daily basis in the media, child sex offenders are walking out of courts with minimal to ZERO sentencing, it reeks of corruption! I would not have been a victim had the courts locked my perpetrator up the first time round! EVERY TIME CHILD ABUSERS WALK FREE, courts are re-victimising victims, they are retraumatising victims, they are saying 'kids lives don't matter' that victims are not worth their time! A good 90% of adults with mental health/substance abuse are living these lives because of some kind of childhood trauma in all its forms - imagine the reduction on the health system if we locked offenders up? Sending a clear message to these pedophiles that if you hurt a child, you will not see daylight again?? Or for AT LEAST 15yrs!
Fix Telstra internet speeds in the Bellingen Shire!I work from home and need the internet to carry out that work. Telstra is charging me for a service they are unable to provide. I know many other people in the Bellingen Shire are being affected. I can't seem to get Telstra to take any action to fix the problem by myself so here I find myself asking for support and the voice of people suffering similar Telstra woes and maybe together we can effect a change.
We Call for a Senate Inquiry into the ABCThe blatant bias of the ABC during the election campaign, the disturbing infiltration of former and current Murdoch employees to senior and influential positions within the ABC corporate family and the disillusionment of the public with the ABC has led us to believe the best course of action would be to petition Senators of the new parliament to conduct an inquiry into all aspects of the operation of the ABC.
McDonalds - not in Glebe pleaseWe don't want McDonalds in Glebe. Glebe has a wonderful cafe culture. Opening a McDonalds, under any name and in any form, will take business away from that village community. We all know that most of your food is bad quality (no matter how much you pretend otherwise) - high in fat, high in sugar, made with poorly sourced ingredients. We know around the world that you pay your workers low wages too. Residents of Glebe and visitors to Glebe don't want to encourage a business that is bad for our health, the environment and doesn't respect the need for living wages. Glebe is well organised. You might remember how the residents of Newtown got themselves together to the point that you left the suburb. Well, know that we are organised too, and we plan to stick this out. Don't move into Glebe, and if you do we are committed to campaigning in the community to ensure you do as little business as is possible - until you leave for good.
Move Packer's Casino off Barangaroo's public parklandBarangaroo was proposed as a people's park to enjoy, combining some commercial development with a public park on the western edge of the City on the Harbour. James Packer's proposed 275m Casino/hotel and apartment tower is being built on public land 30m from the harbour's edge. We have to make a FINAL stand against this monster building or the original vision of Barangaroo as a place for the people of Sydney to enjoy will be lost forever. At no stage of the process has any planning authority given the green light to its being built in OUR park. It can and should be relocated into the "built" section of Barangaroo, leaving the harbourside park for the people. And not to mention saving our iconic skyline from this monster. Sydney people are angry but mostly silent. Please tell the State Government we do not want our parkland used for an awful, shadow-casting Casino. Once that land is gone, it is gone forever. There are other places within Barangaroo to house a six star Casino, without grabbing our parklands. COME ON SYDNEY Please save Barangaroo.
Government Projects should use Australian ProductsAt a time when the nation is suffering from job losses and the destruction of our manufacturing industry, we still have the opportunity to look around and ask why this is happening. It should make sense to anyone that supporting local businesses keeps money in the local economy, which supports jobs and boosts consumer confidence. Money lost to overseas businesses doesn't flow back in to the community. The Government needs to lead by example by supporting Australian owned businesses and Australian made products in all of its projects.
DISMANTLE THE BROKEN AUSTRALIAN PREMIUM SMS SYSTEMThe Premium SMS system, as it operates in Australia, is a poor man's payment processing system where the mobile service provider apparently has no legal obligation to obtain positive confirmation of a customer's authorisation to allow a Premium SMS provider to bill a mobile service. For years, industry standard practice for mobile service providers has been to deny any responsibility for assisting the customer in the resolution of Premium SMS billing disputes and to instead refer all such complaints to the 1300 "help lines" provided by the Premium SMS services themselves. The costs of the lengthy calls to such numbers are automatically added to customers phone bills in addition to the disputed Premium SMS charges. Sometimes these charges are up to 4 times the cost of the originally disputed Premium SMS charges. Disgustingly, the mobile services have no financial incentive to fix this system since they are direct financial beneficiaries of the current broken state of affairs. Given this, legislation must be introduced to ensure that they have a legally enforceable obligation to pro-actively protect their customers from unauthorised Premium SMS billing attempts. The present system stinks to high heaven of the lazy complacency indulged in by mobile service providers who apparently see no legal, ethical or moral obligation to proactively protect their customers from unauthorised Premium SMS billing attempts or the predictable and inevitable costs that are then incurred when the customer follows the mobile service providers' own advice and attempts to seek redress from the Premium SMS providers directly. The current Premium SMS system is fundamentally broken. It has been for years, It is beyond repair. It must be dismantled. Demand action now - Parliament must act!
MALCOLM TURNBULL: STOP SELLING OUT OUR SHIPBUILDING INDUSTRY!I am of the view that it is vital that all Australian defence construction projects are carried out in Australia by Australian workers. Not only does prioritising Australian bidders on large tender projects like this protect Australian jobs, it ensures our defence materiel is made to the highest possible standards. It is essential to our national defence capability as well as the security of our nation and the preservation and growth of domestic manufacturing jobs. Please support me in calling on the Prime Minister to put the interests of all Australians and Australian jobs before the interests of any other country and stop the awarding of a major billion dollar Australian Government defence contract to Spain and instead work with the Australian shipping and maritime industry to undertake the construction project in Australia.
DISABLING TAXIS FOR THE DISABLEDThis is a vital service to the Perth disabled community. Drivers are dedicated and strive to deliver positive outcomes for the community in relation to their transport needs. The Minister wants to revert to a single service which will dictate to both client and driver and diminish the rights and choices of both. He proposes to literally blackmail all of the people involved by denying subsidies to those who don't use his preferred service. We must preserve our freedom to choose which taxi company or driver suits our needs based on the quality of service they provide.
Stop the catastrophic destruction for Palm oilDeforestation, destruction of habitat and species and a health hazard to large parts of Asia. The head of the Global Carbon Project at the CSIRO, Pep Canadell, said the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere may have exceeded 400 parts per million for the first time in 2 million years, because of the 1 billion tonnes of carbon released by the fires in a two-month period. A lot of it has to do with growing palm oil trees.
Save The White House Victoria PointRedlands City Council wants to shut down The White House in Victoria Point! This historic set of buildings is a unique space within the community, fostering a wide variety of local small businesses by providing them with a low cost but high exposure location from which to operate. The community feel and unique mix of tenants is matched no where else in the local area. Tell council you want to HELP SAVE THE WHITE HOUSE!
We want the Archway 1 Theatre Company & Arts Studio to stay in the Bicentennial Park Arches.!The community have been incredibly supportive and very excited for the existence of a theatre space & arts studio under the Archways, in the Park lands. The Archway 1 Theatre Company and Art Studio have been inundated with offers from local residents to help, insisting that we remain in the same location and continue what we do, because it is a great concept that is much needed for the community park and we have a great track record of providing a service to our community, with FREE art classes for adults and children, FREE Drama classes, Poetry in the park, Free Dog portraits, Pancake breakfasts in addition to our art exhibitions and theatre plays. The community have expressed to us directly that they feel our arts space and art studio fulfill a need for them. A well managed arts space that compliments the park and is accessible to the community. The benefits of providing a space for parents and their children for example, who frequent that particular area of the park daily, due to its proximity to the children's playground, cannot be overlooked. Dog walkers alike, have found our initiative to be a welcomed addition to their daily enjoyment of the park. Cyclists have also expressed gratitude at the convenience of being able to literally pull up on their bikes and grab a coffee. For the culturally and artistically inclined, we offer something unique to the existing surrounding sporting fields and natural surrounds. Our theatre productions have a local following, with supporters who have endorsed the merits in the work we do. We have been a part of the Sydney Fringe Festival two years in a row. We source many local actors, directors and crew to work on productions and we provide space for artist talks, film nights, rehearsals, exhibitions, fashion shows, photo and film shoots. Our arts space is an additional destination for light rail commuters, tourists or visitors to the area, as a place of interest along their inner west journey, alighting at the Jubilee Park Oval. We are also considered a reassuring safe haven, for people exercising or walking dogs late at night in the park, as we are open late for theatre rehearsals or artist talks. Supportive comments include; "We have been waiting twenty years for this to happen!" "Thank God you're here!" "WOW, just WOW! This is amazing and reminds me of New York." "I wish I knew you were here, when my kids were at school, they're all grown up now." "I am so HAPPY, HAPPY, HAPPY and excited that you are here!" (82 year old local resident- Patty) "It's about time you guys did this here!" "OMG! This is exactly what I thought should be here." "I normally never visit this part of the park, but now I do." "This is awesome!" "Hey, this is great! Reminds me of Europe." "So glad you guys are here! We are going to come and see some theatre." "Finally, good coffee!" "I am going to tell all the mother and parent groups you guys are here." "I'm going to mention you guys in the local school newsletter." "I can't believe I can walk out my door and down to the park, to watch theatre and have a coffee."
SAVE THE MALTESE LANGUAGE PROGRAM ON SBS RADIOSBS Management are to discontinue two hours from the existing four hours allotted to the Maltese community, SBS Radio fail to see the very needs of our community and incorrectly has given more weight to its size as if the bigger the community the larger its radio audience. We urge the members of the Maltese community, wherever they are in Australia to get behind their community leaders and with one voice lodge a protest in the strongest possible terms. The Maltese Community Councils of NSW and Victoria feel that the management of SBS Radio and their criteria for distribution of language programme time on SBS should include specific community needs and not merely the size of the non-English speaking date from the census. We say to those running SBS Radio that if there is trimming to be made of the available SBS Radio hours, it must come from a reduction of the overgenerous allowance that it has provided to the larger ethnic groups and not from those they think they can easily kick around. Finally, the SBS Management should not treat the Maltese community as soft touch by wanting to discuss with them decisions already taken. Community consultations, when decisions have already been taken are a farce. Let us all unite to this unjust decision by the SBS. **This petition will close COB Tuesday 21st July 2015**
NEEDED: New Mainstream Media Entity For PerthPerth's media is managed externally and there is nothing organic about the issues raised, no pride in the news that is published and no engagement from the wider community due to an apathetic opinion towards change for our city. The majority of Perth is without a representation in the media and with the growth in the State's population, it's about time we had one.
End tailpipe emissionsWhile the Coalition are in denial about their regressive policies on the out of control emissions front we need to rely on citizen action in decreasing our carbon footprint and every little bit helps. Removing petrol and diesel cars from the roads is something we can all have a had in. Most of the advanced economies reduce the sticker price with a subsidy for buying green. Our state government in Victoria talks the talk now it is time to walk the walk. For figures on the impacts and modelling have a look at the Beyond Zero Emissions website and much more. Wake up Australia - we are being left behind.
Get Andrew Bolt off the air and give the job to this platypus! We believe Bolt can't be trusted not to abuse his position of power and he has the court convictions to prove it. <http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/bolt-guilty-of-race-discrimination-20110928-1kw8c.html> As well as routinely targeting Indigenous people, Muslims and other groups for tabloid opinion fodder, he also presumes to know better than 97% of climate scientists on global warming. Why would we want to expose our kids or anyone to that kind of unscientific propaganda? Rather than continue to give this destructive, unscientific and irresponsible lawbreaker air-time, we would much rather watch this platypus, who apart from being exceedingly cute, will probably be an excellent reminder about the importance of looking after waterways and the environment in general. Lastly, while watching Andrew Bolt could easily lead to a rise in blood pressure, we feel this platypus will have the opposite effect.
FSC, remove your green tick from karri forest clear-fells!Karri forest logging has been wrongly awarded a green tick by the Forest Stewardship Council. This means that when we look for the green tick on our toilet paper or photocopy paper because we want to be responsible, we could be supporting the clear-felling of karri forests and giving money to an industry that is pushing Black Cockatoos and other wildlife closer to extinction. The Western Australian Forest Products Commission, which is responsible for this logging, does not comply with the FSC standard and does not deserve this green tick. It is now able to access markets it has no place in, and we are being duped.
Implement the WHO CODE for Marketing Artificial Milk.Since the Abbott Government came to power and dismissed the APMAIF Panel the marketing of artificial milk has increased. Health professionals are increasingly being targeted in magazines and on health professional websites. As breast milk, like the unpaid work of women is not recognized in Gross National Product figures it is not valued and the Government does not protect, promote or support it. Breastfeeding is a public primary preventative health measure. The Federal Government should be leading the charge to promote the fundamental human rights of children to optimum nutrition and live up to Australian Governments commitment as a signatory to The WHO Code for marketing artificial milk. Breastfeeding is gender specific. Fairness in promoting this issue by a predominantly male government would be good.
Stop taxing my period! My name is Subeta and I'm a university student in Sydney. I am constantly confronted with how many people are living below the poverty line and struggling to cope with basic costs. For the 10 million Australians who will menstruate in their lifetime, getting your period isn't just inconvenient and annoying - it's expensive! Half the population menstruates and they shouldn't be financially penalised for it. If you still aren't convinced, let's consider some statistics: on average women, who make up the majority of people who use sanitary products, earn $262.50 per week less than their male counterparts, and they are also statistically at greater risk of living below the poverty line. Furthermore, this tax disproportionately targets those who may already be disadvantaged, that is the homeless and unemployed. So why force this underpaid, at risk and disadvantaged portion of society to pay more for basic essentials? Right now, the Australian government is reviewing the entire Australian tax system, saying that it's looking to make taxes lower, simpler and fairer. This review is a once in a generation opportunity to put the tampon tax on the government agenda for serious consideration, and get this unfair tax removed once and for all. Sign the petition and tell Mr Hockey loud and clear that a period is not a luxury or societal burden, it is an aspect of reproductive health. After all, the government should support and facilitate the availability of sanitary products, not actively restrict it.
Remove the Solar DC Isolator from the Roof!In mid-2012, Australia and New Zealand together issued a new standard for the installation of solar arrays. This standard mandated the use of a specific piece of equipment called the "rooftop DC isolator" in Australia, and by some interpretations also in New Zealand. They did this despite evidence showing that the practice is unsafe. A study from an international testing laboratory found that DC isolators are not safe in a firefighting situation, as they can’t withstand the high-pressure water used to extinguish a fire. The California State Office of the Fire Marshall frowns upon their use, because they give a false sense of security. And Europe, the most mature solar market, opted never to adopt them, also for safety reasons. More than 70 fires in Australia have been caused by this isolator since 2012 -- that is, since it became mandatory! To put this into perspective, there were only 3 fires related to PV systems in Australia prior to the mandatory requirement to install a rooftop DC isolator. The Australian government has responded with product recalls on DC isolators, at least 5 so far, showing this crisis isn’t just limited to a single manufacturer, but to the device itself. There is no evidence to suggest the device improves the safety of a PV system: all it does is increase costs and the risk to homeowners trying to do the right thing. And that's not to mention the catch-22 for PV installers who are both legally bound to comply and obliged to keep their clients safe. Master Electricians Australia chief executive Malcolm Richards in an interview with the ABC late last year said that he says he knows of about 40 to 50 fires that have been started by the faulty isolators. "We're warning home owners to carefully check the brand of isolator that is connected to your solar panels," he said. "If it carries one of these two (recalled) brands ... undertake the isolation procedure until your electrician can come around and fix that up to eliminate or replace it."
Anita Sarkeesian Unlock Your Videos' Comments SectionThis is important because it will give an area for debate and discussion about criticism and other aspects of video games and its culture. Right now there is no one place for people to come and discuss. I feel your videos are the perfect place to be the home to bridge the two sides of the debate. With it, I feel persona attacks and harassment will decrease, or in the very least, be localized and no longer a threat to as many people.

Protect NSW Public from Lead Paint and AsbestosThe recent changes means that licensing is longer be required for painting works worth under $5000, and no longer needed on any standalone interior painting work on NSW homes. This decision has grave consequences for the painting industry, and risks the health of the NSW public.
Celebrate Victoria's Commercial Fisheries and Seafood IndustryVictoria’s Bay and Inlet commercial fisheries have been operating sustainably for over 170 years, yet the industry finds itself under significant pressure from ill-conceived calls for removal of commercial fisheries from Port Phillip Bay. Removing commercial netting operations will not improve catch rates for recreational fishers, instead it will increase competition between recreational fishers and promote the fresh fish illegal black market. The Victorian commercial fishing industry has an excellent record in regards to sustainability and environmental management. The Australian Conservation Foundation has independently assessed Port Phillip Bay commercial fisheries as ‘sustainable’. These fisheries are recognised as some of the best managed and sustainable fisheries in the world, yet we find ourselves with political decisions removing legal operators. In other countries throughout the world local communities celebrate the ability to access fresh locally caught seafood, it is a major part of their culture and contributes massively to their tourism appeal, while also providing food security. The seafood industry continues to question why governments do not undertake these celebrations here, where we know the fisheries are sustainable? You will no longer be able to walk into your local fish retailer or fish and chip shop and select the freshest, local product. This political decision will see massive reductions in the availability of King George Whiting, Bream, Garfish, Pike, Southern Calamari, Australian Salmon, Pilchards and Flounder, caught in Port Phillip Bay being available for purchase that same day. For the seafood consumer this means less choice and ultimately less Victorian fresh, local, sustainably caught seafood available for consumption. It also will result in the available local seafood being considerably more expensive. For recreational fishers, this decision will see a significant shortage of bait with pilchards and sardines caught in Port Phillip Bay not being available. Therefore available bait will be from either interstate (limited supply) or imported, when our commercial industry can provide a stable, sustainable supply at present. The Victorian community can be extremely confident that when they purchase fresh Victorian seafood they are supporting local, small-scale fishing industries that are harvesting seafood in a sustainable and environmentally responsible manner. You need to speak up soon, before it is too late! What this form of policy does is remove the legal operators and promote the thriving black market in seafood sold by “shamateurs” that exists today. There will be a massive increase in demand for illegal fish when the legal operators are removed from the market. To retain jobs in the broader seafood industry there is a need to maintain the commercial fisheries of Victoria's bay and inlets, not remove them. Especially considering some of the Victorian operations are 4th and 5th generation family run businesses. Port Phillip Bay is a public resource in which both commercial and recreational fisheries have co-existed for many decades... it should remain so! Support your local commercial fishers and the Victorian industry. DO NOT SUPPORT the removal of commercial fishing from Victoria's Bays and Inlets.
Improve Hazardous Waste lawsAustralia has fallen far behind equivalent countries, the countries with complex industrial demands and industries that deliver us our high standards of living, when getting rid of the waste. There are major categories of toxic waste that are allowed, either through inadequate laws & regulations, or business cost-avoidance to be simply dumped into the land, without proper treatment. Examples include fluorescent lighting waste (yes, that includes those so called 'eco' globes, the CFL globe). All fluoro lighting contains mercury and when dumped into landfill converts into methylmercury, the most mobile and toxic form of mercury. Then there is all the E-waste we make that has sprung up in the last 10-20 years. We are throwing out mountains of TV's and computers - over 50 million as at 2008. Sorry, the ABS can only give us information that is 6 years or more old. Our country is caught in a vortex of inter-government self-interest and corporate denial. They all minimise action to preserve their interests - no matter if they are government jobs or business jobs. Meanwhile, our country is being loaded up with toxic waste, which will leach out into the waterways and ecosystems every day for generations ahead.
GIVE US OUR PLACE GLOBALLY ON CLIMATE ACTIONThese leaders are the people we want to stand with, to walk with. We have about twelve months to have ready a coherent and practical policy to present to the UN Paris Climate Change meeting which will be working to put in place a replacement for the Kyoto Protocol. Such a replacement will require international support. None of us is willing to continue to be as globally isolated as this government has made us. The biggest of big business showed its economic shift to renewable energy at the NY Climate Conference on 23rd of this month. Our contribution there was timorous, totally unconvincing, and has already brought opprobrium on Australia. Let our views be heard.
Establish a Royal Commission into the behaviour of the ATO.The government is paying in excess of $105m p.a. in legal fees in "ATO matters" including for the protection of ATO staff, or for the harassment of innocent people. Millions are being lost in potential revenues from viable businesses. People are committing suicide, being jailed illegally, being subject to theft, extortion, blackmail, bullying, and asset stripping. It must stop!
Making Alcoa clean up toxic landfill on Geelong's outskirtsThe landfill is located very close to Geelong, the second largest city in Victoria, Australia. This material poses a health risk and Alcoa must be held to account. And that's what this is about. Clean up after yourself, Alcoa! News just in: The EPA has issued Alcoa with a clean up notice. This does not mean the fight is over-- Alcoa can still try and squirm their way out of their responsibilities. The EPA needs to know that the community is watching, so signing this petition is as important as ever. We are close, now we just need to spread the word and get as many signatures as we can.
Port Adelaide Football Club drop your dirty sponsor EnergyAustralia.EnergyAustralia is the owner and operator of the dirty brown coal fired power station at Yallourn in Victoria. Every hour it burns 2,400 tonnes of brown coal making it one of Australia's most polluting, carbon emission intensive industrial operations. EnergyAustralia's submission to the Renewable Energy Target review seeks to water down the target in a way that would allow it, EnergyAustralia, to continue to profit from polluting with brown coal while reducing the expansion of more renewable energy. With the repeal of the Carbon Tax EnergyAustralia will be able to pollute for free and add to the risks of climate change. Surveys consistently show that Australians want more Renewable Energy and less carbon pollution not the other way around. Just look around at the roofs of homes and businesses in the Port Adelaide area. There's solar panels popping up everywhere because of the Renewable Energy Target incentives. The Port Adelaide Football Club is out of touch with its community and should be actively promoting healthy and sustainable facets of our society not dirty, polluting, climate change culprits like EnergyAustralia. The Port board should show a bit a bit of good old Port Adelaide tradition and support your community just as your community supports you by negotiating clean responsible partnerships with clean responsible businesses and not making dirty deals with big, dirty businesses. C'mon Port ditch EnergyAustralia now! The board has the Power- to be clean!
