Stop Police Brutality at Mardi Gras
To: Mike Gallacher, Minister for Police and Emergency Services
We call on you to publicly investigate Police conduct at Sydney's Mardi Gras and the complaints made by members of the public about violence and police brutality. We call on you to ensure that all officers involved in misconduct are disciplined and that all police officers are properly trained in sensitivity to the LGBTQI community. [Warning: the video below contains graphic violence.]
Why is this important?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=wxtFtVfAeeE Shocking footage has emerged of Police brutality at the Sydney Mardi Gras. And this is not an isolated incident. Several victims have begun to come forward to speak publicly about their treatment by police. It's appalling that at a celebration for the Gay and Lesbian community where police are meant to be protecting the community, that they would victimise and beat people. Nobody should be subject to unprovoked and unnecessary violence at the hands of the police. It puts our community at risk and makes it harder for the police to do their job. Police brutality and over policing is a real problem for young people, homeless people and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. It's up to us to hold the police to account for incidents like this.
